Frequently
Asked
Questions

Answers to common questions about dental care, treatments, insurance, and what to expect at Dr. Patel Dentistry.

General Dental Care

Are you accepting new patients?

Yes, Dr. Patel Dentistry continues to grow and welcome new patients. Walk-ins and emergency appointments are also always welcome.

Should I choose an electric or manual toothbrush?

Both have merits. Manual brushes are affordable and properly shaped for most users, while electric models help those with limited dexterity or those who struggle with proper technique. Electric brushes range from $20 to $200. Ultimately, proper brushing technique matters most β€” ask us for guidance at your next visit.

Why is flossing so important?

Toothbrushes cannot reach the spaces between teeth effectively. Dental floss or tape used once a day cleans these hard-to-reach surfaces and helps prevent cavities and infections between teeth. This simple daily habit makes a significant difference in your overall oral health.

Why is it important to visit my dentist every 6 months?

Regular checkups allow us to detect tooth decay, oral cancer, and gum disease before they become serious β€” and expensive β€” problems. We recommend at least twice per year, and occasionally three to four visits annually for patients managing specific conditions.

Gum Health

Why do my gums bleed when I brush my teeth?

Bleeding gums are usually a sign of periodontal (gum) disease caused by plaque and tartar buildup along the gum line. When caught early, a professional cleaning combined with improved home care can often correct the issue. If left untreated, gum disease can lead to tooth loss.

Bad Breath

How can I prevent bad breath?

Most bad breath (halitosis) is caused by bacteria that produce sulfur compounds. The solutions include meticulous oral hygiene β€” brushing twice a day, flossing daily, and tongue scraping as part of your routine. If bad breath persists, it may indicate gum disease or another underlying condition. We can help identify the cause.

Advanced Treatments

What are dental implants and what does the procedure involve?

Dental implants are titanium posts surgically placed below the gum line that fuse with the jawbone and act as artificial tooth roots. Replacement teeth β€” called crowns, made of porcelain β€” are then attached to the posts. After healing, they look and function just like natural teeth. We offer free consultations for dental implants.

What is cosmetic dentistry and what treatments does it involve?

Cosmetic dentistry addresses aesthetic concerns β€” teeth that are crooked, stained, chipped, or missing. Treatments range from simple teeth whitening to full smile makeovers using veneers, bonding, crowns, and implants. The goal is to boost your confidence and quality of life alongside your oral health.

What are the benefits of laser dentistry?

Laser technology enables faster, more precise treatment with reduced pain and faster healing. Benefits include reliably detecting and removing calculus without residue, treating gum lesions with minimal discomfort, and desensitizing temperature-sensitive teeth. Many patients find laser procedures require little to no anesthesia.
